Hi!

I'm Fanny, the founder of Bangla Begum. Below I happily answer the questions I am most often asked. I also spoke about my work in WWD, Numéro and on this industry podcast here (very long and fully in French, sorry).

xx Fanny

  • I studied philosophy and literature in Paris. Jewelry came to me only after I moved to India, at the age of 21. I stayed for nine years and discovered jewelry there.

  • Bangla Begum is the name of the imaginary character my brand is based on. Technically, it means lady from Bengal. But it is also a full name.

  • I do. Sometimes I also get my ideas modelled in 3D. And I also bring shapes and weird objects to the atelier.

  • Technically, we use exceptional craftsmanship usually reserved for fine jewelry. But we use it to make affordable pieces. Also, most of our pieces are made in-house in our Paris atelier.

I often describe my work as poetico-political jewelry. If you need a more palatable word, I am also fine with literary jewelry. A friend of mine says that I make jewelry with chutzpah which I like too.

I do try to put thoughts and humour into my pieces and there is definitely a big narrative element in them.

  • I want to grow the Bangla Begum atelier into a fully self-sufficient jewelry factory in the heart of Paris.

  • Jewelry is my medium. Some people express themselves through music or painting. For me it's through metal, beads, strass, diamonds and ribbons.

  • That would be insane, I am so completely engulfed in Bangla Begum!

  • They're insane!
